Signs of a Blown Speaker
A blown speaker has a damaged voice coil, torn cone or broken suspension. Typical signs are fuzzy distortion, scratching sounds, silence in one driver and a rattle when playing bass. Run the sweep above at low volume and listen for these.
The Test
- Play the bass sweep at low volume.
- Listen for scratching, crackle or buzz.
- Press gently on the cone of an external speaker and feel for rubbing.
- Compare with another speaker.
- Try a different audio source to rule out cable and app issues.
Blown or Just Dirty?
Dust and water cause muffled sound but not scratching. Use the speaker cleaner sound and water eject sound first. If distortion remains, the speaker is likely damaged.
Repair or Replace
Small phone speakers can be replaced by a technician. Larger drivers can be re-coned or replaced. Prevent damage by avoiding clipping, keeping volume moderate and matching amplifier power. Also read speaker distortion fix.
