What Causes Distortion?
Distortion happens when the signal or speaker is pushed beyond its limits. Causes include excessive volume, bass boost, bad files, damaged cones, loose parts and low battery in portable speakers. See the distortion article for the theory.
Test With a Tone
Play 100 Hz at low volume and slowly raise it. If the tone becomes fuzzy early, the speaker is overdriven or damaged. Compare with other frequencies, and try the sine, then square waveform.
Fixes
- Lower the volume and disable bass boost.
- Clean the grille with the cleaner sound.
- Replace the cable or source.
- Charge the battery fully.
- Try a different file or app.
If It Stays Distorted
Permanent distortion at low volume suggests a blown speaker. See blown speaker test and crackling speaker fix.
